Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Methwold lies in the extreme southwest of
Norfolk close to the border with Cambridgeshire and sitting within Norfolk's
share of The Fens. Methwold is located about 6 miles north of the Suffolk
market town of Brandon and sits on the B1112 road which connects Stoke
Ferry with the Suffolk town of Mildenhall. Methwold was once big enough
to merit a market but that status has declined to that of a large village.
Methwold parish is one of the largest in the county, the area consisting
of a mixture of Fenland & Breckland would have had a varied economy
underpinned by the usual arable farming but including grazing, warrenries
as well as the wildfowling, thatch reed harvesting and other activities
of the watery Fens. A local industry which merits mention was the exploitation
of the flint-rich soils for the manufacture of flints for lighters and
other generators of sparks. |

Two register books cover the period of this transcript, the first of 1600 entries runs to 1856, the second of 800 runs onward to completion in 1891. Both are filmed on Microfilm MF1017 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office. The film is not one of the more recent productions but nevertheless is adequate to the task. It must be stated that given the length of this transcript many clerks passed through and not all were kind to the transcriber. Some idiosyncratic spelling was found and has been left unchanged except for professions of the fathers. |
