Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Mattishall is located in eastern central
Norfolk, the village is south of the busy A47 road which crosses Norfolk
from west to east and about 5 miles east of the market town of East Dereham
and 10 miles west of the city of Norwich. Mattishall is a rather substantial
village, much grown as a commuter village in recent times, spread mainly
westwards along a wide lane which parallels the A47. With its sister parish
of Mattishall Burgh it now forms a centre of population to rival some
smaller market towns. Mattishall has virtually all of its facilities intact,
pubs shops and some services including frequent bus connections to the
city. The main crossroads of lanes by the church is the centre of the
parish and is very much the point where the oldest properties are found
as well as most facilities. |

Two standard register books cover the period of the transcript, the first is an 800-entry register, the second a 2400-entry register which continues beyond the transcript period until deposited incomplete in the late 20th century. Both registers are filmed (for the transcript period) on Microfilm MFRO633 (the second register spills over to the next film for later entries) in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office. This film is one of the more modern films in the collection and benefits from the improvement in images achievable today. The images throughout are clear and contrasting, however at times the handwriting leaves a little to be desired being very small on occasion and rather crabby and shaky on others. As a result there is a caveat regarding the possibility of misreads but it is to be hoped few errors will have crept in. |
