Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of North Lopham lies in southern Norfolk about
6 miles west of the market town of Diss. North Lopham is a large linear
village built along a north/south running lane which heads northwards
from the A1066 road which links Diss with Thetford. North Lopham is a
large village, its population has almost approached 1,000 at times, and
today is still an important village in this area of south Norfolk. North
Lopham sits about 3 miles north of the Waveney valley, the river marks
the border with neighbouring Suffolk, and stands on a broad agricultural
plain about 50 metres above sea level. The rich soils are dominated by
arable agriculture notably for cereals, oil seed and occasionally beet.
North Lopham is almost a mile in length from north to south but barely
reaches more than a couple of hundred yards to the west or east of its
lane, the village retains most of its amenities including shops and pub. |

Two standard 800-entry register books cover the period of this transcript. The first covering 1813 to 1849 is filmed on Microfilm MF1660, the second running onwards to the early 21st century is filmed on Microfilm MFRO726 both films in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office. Both films are relatively recent filmings and benefit greatly from the higher quality achieved these days. Both films show good contrast and have clear and sharp images making for a straightforward piece to prepare. The standard of clerical competence is somewhat lacking in places e.g. dates omitted in part of in full for a few entries but hopefully this has not resulted in widespread misreads. |
