Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Knapton lies in northeastern Norfolk quite
close to Norfolk's North Sea coast, one a number of small parishes which
cluster between North Walsham and the sea. Knapton is a compact village
built on a sharp bend in the B1145 road which heads from North Walsham
to the seaside spot of Mundesley. Knapton rather hides away on a back
lane which parallels the larger road. With classic Norfolk simplicity
the primary location of most housing is on "The Street". The
soils are rather light and sandy around Knapton but that doesn't prevent
the major occupation being arable farming, like much of Norfolk cereals,
oil seed and beet predominate in the large open fields. Knapton sits on
a little rise at 30 metres above the sea enabling views towards the coast
just 2 miles away to the northeast. |

A single standard 800-entry register book covers the period of the transcript and extends beyond to finish in 1925. This register is filmed on Microfilm MFRO366 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office which was used to prepare this transcript. This film is a recent production and benefits greatly from the image quality which is now achievable. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the quality of cleric employed to complete the register. The entries are rather scruffy and for a short period (1825- 1828) many were undated; eagle-eyed readers will also spot a lady recorded as "William" she is Mary on another entry! |
