Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Kirby Cane lies in southeastern Norfolk
close to the border with neighbouring Suffolk. The parish lies on slightly
higher ground to the north of the valley of the River Waveney about 4
miles northwest of the Suffolk market town of Beccles. There is no significant
compact village to Kirby Cane, it is merely a scatter of farms and cottages
grouped along a lane which runs north of the A143 road which runs from
Beccles to Diss. The area rises strongly from the valley of the Waveney,
Pewter Hill climbing up a notable slope (for Norfolk) where the course
of the river over history has created a prominent former river cliff line.
Kirby Cane, nowadays almost runs into Ellingham to the south but to the
north is a relatively empty agricultural plain stretching northwards towards
Loddon. |

A single standard 800-entry register book covers the period of the transcript and runs onward to finish in 1891. This register is split between two Microfilm MF910 holding the early part and MF911 the latter, both in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office which were used to prepare this transcript. Whilst the images on these films are perfectly acceptable the same cannot be said for the standard of the clerical work in the register. The arrival of the Reverend Upcher signaled a period when the standard of writing was quite simply atrocious. The clerical standard is also poor in that some entries are missing essential information such as full date, there is omission of one or more names and occupations and the side margins are stuffed with omitted entries added later. In short this is a clerical mess and it would not surprise the transcriber if mistakes have been made in the preparation of this transcript. Use with care - you have been warned. |
