Baptisms 1813 to 1880
There has been a Roman Catholic community in King's Lynn since the early 18th century and prior to that most certainly clandestinely. With liberalisation of religious laws the community emerged in the 19th century and began to record vital events more formally. The records deposited with the Norfolk Record Office comprise 3 hand-written books and a single printed ledger - all are in latin. Handwriting is often a problem in reading old registers - in the case of these deposits it is a major hindrance. The priests records are extremely difficult to read largely as a result of the handwriting style and spelling of the priest, a considerable number of entries have been interpreted and errors may certainly have occurred for which apology is made in advance. Entries in the printed book overlap and duplicate some of the hand-written entries in the prior ledger. Where a difference is apparent between the two entries both are left where they are common only the earlier record is listed. Please note all entries have been anglicized from the Latin - as a convention the male name James is assumed for all entries for Jacobi. |
