Kempstone St Paul

Baptisms 1813 to 1880

The parish of Kempstone lies in central Norfolk about 7 miles northeast of the market town of Swaffham. Kempstone is situated about 2 miles south of the B1145 road which runs across mid-Norfolk from Bawdeswell to King's Lynn, it's closest neighbour is Litcham. There is very little to modern day Kempstone and it would seem to have always been a small place. A tiny parish of just 800 acres with no village just a loose gathering of farms and cottages around Kempstone Lodge. The parish was almost totally arable in the time of this transcript and not much has changed. St Paul's church lies in ruins close by the Lodge and is largely inaccessible except for the intrepid trespasser as there are no "rights of way" marked upon modern Ordnance Survey maps to reach the site. Even Pevsner was unable to reach the site and his account is limited to detail obtained from documentary sources. These describe a 14th century church largely in the Decorated style, the nave having 11th century origins remaining whilst the tower was 15th century. The nave roof collapsed in the 1950s, followed by the chancel arch in 1978 and the chancel roof in 1983 to leave little more than a pile of rubble.

A single standard 800-entry register book covers the period of this transcript and runs through to 1929 when closed incomplete, this register is filmed on Microfilm MF1680 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office. Images of this register are also available on-line and were used to prepare this transcript making for a straightforward piece to prepare.
