The parish of Kelling lies in north Norfolk and forms
part of the north coast of the county. Kelling is sited about 5 miles
west of the seaside town of Sheringham and the same east of the small
port of Blakeney. Kelling village sits astride the main A149 coast road
and spreads inland from there along a narrow lane which climbs steeply
(for Norfolk) onto a heath-clad ridge, a feature left by retreating glaciers
in the Ice Age. Between the village and the sea there are a few hundred
yards of saline marshes which are protected by a high shingle ridge which
runs westwards to eventually become the spit of Blakeney Point. Kelling
is a relatively small community and judging from the occupations of the
menfolk in the transcript was concerned more with agriculture than the
neighbouring North Sea. |

A single standard 800-entry register covers the period of the transcript and, indeed, continued in use up to the middle of the 20th century. This register is filmed on Microfilm MF1402 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office and this was used to prepare this transcript. The film is from a period when techniques were steadily improving and it certainly helps that the register was in a good condition as the quality otherwise would have been questionable. The handwriting merits a caveat as it is often scruffy and tricky to read also some entries are so poorly recorded that dates are incomplete calling into question the standards of the clerks. |
