1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Intwood with Keswick All Saints |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Intwood lies
roughly 3 1/2 miles southwest of the city of Norwich and sits
approximately a mile east of the busy A11 road which connects
Norwich on to Thetford & London. The parish incorporated the
smaller neighbouring parish of Keswick, a mile further east, when
the latter's church became ruinous in the 15th century with all
vital events recorded for both parishes in Intwood's registers.
There is very little to modern Intwood, no defined village as
such, just a collection of farms and cottages centred on the
estate of Intwood Hall. The Gresham family first built a hall here
in 1560 but that building has been demolished, a new hall being
constructed in the early 19th century; the walled gardens,
however, remain from the 16th century as does a gazebo. As an
estate village, with most land in the hands of a single landowner,
inbound migration could be discouraged and no village developed
accordingly. The economy of the parish would have been defined by
the needs of the estate and like most Norfolk parishes would have
been based upon arable farming. Today Intwood sits rather close to
the expanding city and in recent times the Norwich Southern Bypass
has carved its route through to the north of hall and church,
beyond it lies the ever expanding suburbs of Cringleford which
surely, in time, may come to threaten Intwood's rural peace. |

A single standard 800-entry register book covers the period of this transcript and runs onward to completion only in the late 20th century, this was a small parish of fewer than 100 parishioners. This register is filmed on Microfilm MFRO497 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office, a film that benefits greatly from modern filming techniques to produce clean and crisp imagery. In recent times digital images of this register have become available to view, for those with a subscription, on all of the major commercial sites. Few issues were recorded in the production of this transcript thanks to the good quality of image available. |
