Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Hunstanton lies in the extreme north-west
of the county of Norfolk. A coastal parish Hunstanton is nowadays a major
seaside resort with extensive holiday accommodation. It's position on
the westward facing Wash shore is supposed to grant it the nickname of
"Sunny Hunny". A closer look at the map will show that Hunstanton
is actually two distinct parts, the newer Victorian resort and the older
settlement of Old Hunstanton. The original village lies almost a mile
north of the modern centre and is grouped around the hall and estates
of the L'Estrange family at Hunstanton Hall. Old Hunstanton by comparison
to the seaside resort is a rather peaceful almost genteel and quiet village. |

Two standard 800-entry register books make up the body of this transcript. The first was abandoned a few pages short of completion (the new clerk complaining of the register being abused prior to his appointment) in 1862 and the second book running through the end date of this transcript and continuing until 1894. Both registers are filmed on Microfilm MF744 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office and from which this transcript was prepared. The film is an older one and not of recent quality but the filming is adequate to make for legibility and as a result, subject to the usual caveats regarding the hand of the clerks, this was a straightforward transcript to prepare. It is to hoped few errors will have crept into its production. |
