Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Houghton (one of three of that name in Norfolk)
lies in the northwestern portion of central Norfolk. Houghton is situated
roughly midway between the market town of Fakenham and the port of King's
Lynn and just north of the A148 road which links the two. Houghton is
dominated by the illustrious stately home of Houghton Hall, home of the
Walpole family for centuries including the Prime Ministers of that name.
The parish has been extensively modified to form formal grounds and the
original landscape transformed into parkland. The original village of
Houghton was relocated to sit alongside the elegant approach road from
the south and most work was in support of the Estate. Nowadays hall &
grounds are a notable visitor attraction and managed by conservation agencies. |

A single standard 800-entry register book covers the period of this transcript and continues beyond to the 20th century. This register is filmed on Microfiche 3 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office which was used as the basis for this transcript. The image quality, in line with most fiche of this era, is rather poor. The period up to 1830 is rather badly faded with many entries almost invisible; the later period suffers from an atrocious hand and I found several entries almost impossible to decipher; all is rather slovenly kept with much crossing out and dirty pages. There will be errors in this transcript and users should treat this with caution. |
