Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Horsford lies
around 4 miles north of the city of Norwich and sits on the B1149
road which connects the city with the market town of Holt.
Horsford is a much changed village, its position close to the city
has encouraged growth in modern developments making it one of
Norwich's major suburbs. As a result of that growth Horsford has
spread from its medieval heart for almost 2 miles along the B1149
encroaching upon the heathland as it has grown. At the time of
this transcript Horsford was a mid-sized village, atypical of many
in Norfolk because of the extensive heathland that formed on
glacial deposits around the village. The extensive heath,
described in early gazetteers as "flat, sterile heath" provided
commons and supplied the broom for the local besom tying trade
which supported a few in the parish. Besides the heathland, much
of which is set to forestry today, the acreage was almost 60/40 in
favour of typical Norfolk arable farming, the pastureland being
concentrated along the shallow valley of the stream that drains
eastwards towards the Bure. |

Two 800-entry register books cover the period of this transcript, the first a pre-printed and pre-numbered book, the second lacks numbering that being rather chaotically completed by the clerk who makes many errors in that numbering. The first register is abandoned incomplete and the second repeats 16 entries from the end of the first, it also runs onward to completion in 1883. Both registers are filmed on Microfilm MFRO550 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office which was used to complete this transcript. It is fair to say the clerical standard leaves a lot to be desired and may result in misreads as a consequence. |
