1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Horning St Benedict |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish if Horning lies in eastern Norfolk about 10
miles northeast of the city of Norwich. Horning sits on the northern banks
of the River Bure in the heart of Norfolk's Broadland and its history
is largely tied up with that river and the other rivers of Broadland.
Horning would have earned its living largely from pastoral farming on
the river meadows of the Bure whilst supplementing that with wildfowling,
thatching and river traffic from the wherries. No mention of Horning would
be complete without St Benet's Abbey which lies within the parish and
just east of the Bure's confluence with the Ant. Founded in or about 800
and re-founded in 1019 as a Benedictine monastery it has the distinction
of having survived the dissolution of Henry VIII only to be abandoned
in 1545. Today only fragments survive in an atmospheric location. Horning,
today, largely earns its living from the Broadland boating holiday business
being a major centre for boat hire and a popular stop on Broadland routes. |

Two standard 800-entry register books cover the period of this transcript. The first register is filmed on Microfilm MF1706 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office which was used to prepare this transcript. The film is one of the more modern editions and benefits from clear and crisp images making for a straightforward piece to prepare. The second register is yet to be filmed and was viewed as an original document. It should be noted that the clerk continues numbering from the prior register it not being pre-stamped. |
