Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Hockham (also known as Great Hockham - Little
Hockham is little more than a farmstead a mile to the south) lies in southwestern
Norfolk about 6 miles northeast of the market town of Thetford. The village
lies on the A1075 road which connects Thetford with Watton. The road now
bypasses the village to the west and there is peace in the high street
nowadays. Hockham lies in Breckland amid extensive areas of forestry,
pines growing where once rabbit warrens and grazing sheep predominated.
The soil is very sandy and poor for arable farming. Just west of the parish
the ancient trackway of Peddar's Way runs forming the parishes western
boundary. |

Two standard 800 entry register books cover the period of the transcript, the first running until 1856, the second finishing beyond the period of the transcript. Images for these register are available to view on the free web site Familysearch and these were used to prepare this transcript. The image quality was acceptable and the handwriting although variable was also acceptable. Hopefully few errors will have been committed in the construction of this transcript. |
