Baptisms 1813 to 1871
The parish of Hilgay lies in western Norfolk on the edges
of Norfolk's Fenland. The village, formerly astride the A10 road from
the market town of Downham Market to Ely, is now bypassed and quiet with
only local traffic to disturb the peace. Hilgay is situated on the banks
of the River Wissey a couple of miles east of where that river merges
with the Great Ouse. All around are the broad and wide flatlands of the
Fens rich in agricultural land and low lying and easily flooded. Most
of Hilgay is built along the old line of the A10 which formerly ran on
a north-south line but is now diverted to the west to pass the village.
The site takes advantage of an "island" if higher ground (just
10 metres of a rise) above the surrounding Fens which lie at just 2 metres
above sea-level despite being over 15 miles from the sea. |

The records for Hilgay have yet to be deposited
to cover the full period of the transcript; two standard 800-entry register
books have been deposited covering 1813 until May 1851. The remainder of
the transcript has had to be completed using those Bishop's Transcripts
which have been retained. Unfortunately this series is incomplete - 1870
and the full run from 1872 to 1880 is missing. The two deposited register are filmed on Microfilm MF1010 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office, the BTs are filmed in annual microfiche batches by Archdeaconry. The quality of the Microfilm is very satisfactory with clear and contrasting images, that of the Microfiche is in places dubious with indications of damage to the original as well as poor filming quality. As a consequence that period is subject to a heavy qualification on accuracy although every effort has been made to achieve a satisfactory transcript. It is hoped that the register books from 1851 onwards will eventually make their way into the publican domain. When that happens the BT portion will be rechecked and corrected and the 10 missing years will be added. |
