Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Harpley lies in western Norfolk roughly
midway between the market town of Fakenham and the port of King's Lynn,
it is approximately 8 miles west of the former and sits just south of
the A148 road which connects the two. A glance at any map will also show
the main feature of the parish, the ancient structure of Peddar's Way
which cuts a straight line through the west of the parish and forms a
national trail today. This is a long occupied part of Norfolk's landscapes
as the tumuli dotting Harpley common to the northwest of the village testify.
Like most parishes in Norfolk Harpley would have been a farming community,
the majority arable but in this part of Norfolk it would also have had
sheep walks and warrenries. Today Harpley is a mid-sized village with
most facilities still remaining and thankfully the few yards which separate
it from the busy A148 keep it relatively peaceful. |

Sadly the parish have yet to deposit the full set of registers covering the period of this transcript. A single standard 800-entry register book runs to 1867 when it is inexplicably abandoned with over 100 entry spaces vacant. The remainder of these entries were sourced from the Bishop's Transcript on loose-leaf folios. The register is filmed on Microfilm MF595, not one of the more recent quality films but despite the poor clerical standards exhibited is adequate to the task. BTs are always slightly poorer and in this case, like most in Norfolk, the year 1875 is missing making the transcript incomplete, however this is only for 3 entries if the numbering is accurate. As stated the clerical standard is poor with examples of incomplete and absent dates, out-of-sequence entries are numerous in the early part of the register and some marginal entries are inserted making for a taxing piece to prepare & check for typos. |
