1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Hardwick St Margaret |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Hardwick lies in southern Norfolk, east
of the A140 road linking Norwich to Ipswich and roughly 5 miles north
of the market town of Harleston. The parish consists of a single lane
of cottages together with Hardwick Hall. The presence of the Hall is indicative
that this was a "closed" parish with little movement of persons
into and out. The village is little more than a hamlet lying on a wide
agricultural plateau that fills most of this corner of south Norfolk and
eventually descends to the Waveney valley. |

The records for Hardwick are something of a curiosity. A single register (800-entry) book was commenced in 1813, this abruptly ends in 1855 before resuming, after 10 blank pages, in 1880 from whence it continues to modern times. It is unclear if there are any entries for the intervening period - no register deposited and no Bishop's Transcripts either. The stub of register is filmed on Microfilm MFRO694 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office and from which this transcript was prepared. This film is a very recent filming and is of excellent quality. As a consequence this was a straightforward transcript to prepare and it is to be hoped that few errors have crept into its production. |
