Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Halvergate lies in eastern Norfolk about
3 miles south of the large village of Acle, Halvergate is a substantial
village lying on the edge of the marshes to the south of the A47 (Norwich
to Great Yarmouth) road. Halvergate has a long history, in much earlier
times the sea would have come inland to the edge of the present marshes
and Halvergate was a substantial port before Great Yarmouth existed. Nowadays
the area has agriculture as its base, on higher ground to the west of
the village its is intensively arable but on the marshes (largely reclaimed
by man) there are extensive grazing marshes. In winter time these marshes
become the haunt of geese and duck and often the water levels rise to
resemble past times. Most of the village is built on the slightly higher
ground, keeping its feet dry on the light sandy soils. |

Unfortunately not all of Halvergate's baptismal records have been deposited with the Norfolk Record Office. A single standard 800-entry register book runs to 1856 but the successor has yet to make its way into the public domain. As a consequence the Bishop's Transcripts were used to supplement these entries, the BTs are, however, incomplete as 1875 is missing as its is for so many parishes. The first register is filmed on Microfilm MF1409 which was used to prepare that section, this film is adequate to its task albeit the register is highly irregular with many out of date sequence entries and marginal additions. The BTs were accessed from the free web site Familysearch where the quality was found to be better than most of its ilk. Hopefully few errors will have been made as a result. |
