The parish of Griston lies in the southwestern portion of central Norfolk about 2 miles southeast of the small market town of Watton. Griston sits just over a half mile east of the A1075 road which links Watton through to Thetford. Early maps show Griston as a small and compact village clustered around its church & inn, today the village has expanded southwards largely as a result of new developments associated with the presence of Wayland Prison and the former World War II air base which lies to its north and holds former military property and light industrial units. Griston sits on the edges of Norfolk's Breckland and would have been a typical farming parish with arable in the ascendancy, early gazetteers estimate as much as 70% of the parish acreage as being set to arable. Nearby to the village is the patch of ancient woodland, Wayland Wood, which is forever associated with the story of the "Babes in the Wood", the story first appeared in 1595 and relates "the story of a wicked uncle who hires a couple of murderers to kill his orphaned niece and nephew (because, if they die young, he will inherit their estate)", the children being abandoned into the woodland to die. Quite how much truth lies in the tale is unknown. Today Wayland Wood is managed as a nature reserve and has a delightful circular walk around it, a treat in bluebell season.

St Peter & St Paul's church sits at what would have once been the main crossroads of the village, the air base having chopped away the northern running lane. A tiny trace of early work remains in the form of a small lancet in the northern wall of the chancel indicating the church was originally of the 13th century. Today's church, however, is almost entirely a product of the great church-building era that was the 14th century. The remaining windows of the chancel are Decorated in style from the early 14th century whereas documentary evidence places the western tower to be much later. There are will donations indicating the tower was in-build in 1477 and was only finally completed in 1568, an inscription on the font indicates the church may well have originally had a steeple, making it very late Perpendicular in style. The remaining main body of the church, whilst clearly 14th century in origin is much impacted by the Victorian restoration. Perpendicular styled windows to the nave indicate a late 14th century or 15th century origin. The major restoration of 1884, however, saw many changes including amongst them a re-roofing to the nave. The main lane running north to south, Church Road, is of sufficient width to permit on-street parking outside the churchyard which has its main entrance at the junction with Caston Road. Whilst the churchyard is largely open & uncluttered the western tower sits against its western edges and looms above the adjacent road making good views of that tower difficult for the photographer.
