Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Gressenhall lies in
central Norfolk roughly 3 miles northwest of the market town of
East Dereham. Gressenhall sits about a mile west of the B1146 road
which connects East Dereham with Fakenham. Gressenhall is a large
crossroads village sitting on the western side of a valley
containing a tributary of the River Wensum. Gressenhall parish
expanded in late-medieval times to incorporate Great Bittering
adding an extra 400 acres to its 2,600. Like most Norfolk parishes
in this area of rich soils it was totally dominated by arable
farming albeit the nearby damp woodland of Dillington Carr would
have provided some variation of pasture in the river valley and
the products of a semi-managed woodland from coppicing. In more
recent times Gressenhall has expanded northwards as new
developments have sprung up along the Bittering Road. Today
Gressenhall is most famous for the museum which occupies the
former workhouse site to its east, here not only are the
conditions of the former workhouse explored but also a fascinating
museum of rural life attracting many visitors. |

Both register are filmed on Microfilm MF743 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office. In addition there are digitised images, free to view on Familysearch and for those with a subscription on most of the major commercial sites.
