1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Fincham St Martin |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Fincham lies in western Norfolk roughly
midway between the market town of Swaffham and that of Downham Market.
Fincham is a large village sitting astride the A1122 road which links
those two market towns. The route of this road follows that of an ancient
Roman Road and is remarkably straight to prove it to the east of the village.
Fincham was sufficiently large in mediaeval times to be divided into two
parishes St Martin & St Michael, the latter was demolished in 1745
and the two united. Despite the apparent decline from being large enough
to warrant two parishes and to holding twice annual horse fairs, Fincham
remains a large and thriving village with all services intact. The nearby
air base of RAF Marham has undoubtedly helped in keeping the village thriving.
Most of Fincham's properties lie along either side of the A1122 which
forms the main village street. |

Two standard 800-entry registers cover the period of this transcript, the second being completed just a year after this cutoff. Both registers are filmed on Microfilm MF1434 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office which was used to prepare this transcript. The film is a relatively recent edition and benefits from the improved techniques available today. As a consequence there are only the usual grumbles about handwriting to mar what was a straightforward piece to prepare. |
