Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The joint parishes of Feltwell St Mary and St Nicholas
lie in the far south-west of Norfolk, about as far from the county town
of Norwich as it's possible to get yet remaining in the county. The parish
on the borders of Cambridgeshire holds more in common with the Fen capital
of Ely than with Norwich. Feltwell is a substantial village, formerly
a navigable port but now on the edge of the black peat Fen. The village
stands just above sea-level but has a vast area of low lying fenland stretching
to the west and the county border within its geography. |

The records of St Mary & St Nicholas are separate up to the start of this transcript, thereafter being ajoint register. In all 4 standard 800 entry books cover the period of the transcript, all filmed on Microfilm MF1008 from which this transcript was prepared. The filming is relatively recent and is clear with good contrast, however substantial periods have suffered from fading of the entries and are a struggle to read in certain periods. The period covering the 1830s is particularly poor with a cramped and sruffy hand compounding the problems. Whilst every effort has been made to make an accurate transcript it cannot be guarenteed on this occasion. |
