1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Docking Workhouse |
Baptisms 1837 to 1880
The Union Workhouse at Docking was established in 1837 as a result of legislation. The workhouse served the north-western corner of Norfolk and drew from a catchment that stretched from just west of Wells to north of Dersingham and a roughly triangular stetch of land inland. As can be seen from the entries it was a frequent place for illegitimate births and worth searching if an event is missing from a parish register. The records cover from 1837 to the end of the transcription period and are very patchy in coverage. There is a spell in the register where births are registered giving only the mother's name - I have chosen to omit such entries as the child is unnamed and the entry of little genealogical value. The single book is filmed on Microfilm MFX301 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office and from which this transcript is prepared. The entries are mostly clear but the writing is often extremely small and difficulties were experienced in reading a few entries as a result. |
