1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Docking Primitive Methodist Circuit |
Baptisms 1829 to 1880
The Primitive Methodists in northwestern Norfolk established a congregation in around 1820, it became a full circuit from 1843. This circuit covered the northwestern corner of Norfolk as well as the substantial villages of Docking, the Burnhams and the Rudhams. For the period of this transcript 3 registers survive as deposits FC49 items 8 to 10, they are filmed on Microfilm MF1777 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office which was used to prepare this transcript. Each register is in the normal parish format of an 8 entry page but is not pre-stamped with an entry serial number. I have numbered the entries serially within each book to enable anybody to relocated the relevant entry albeit they are sorted into date order here. The apparent disarray in the sequence is created by the clerics initially allotting pages to each population centre, those larger one quickly outpaced the smaller resulting in many out-of-sequence entries. There are also backdated entries which even document events outwith the covering dates of the registers. It should be stated that the standard of clerical work was very poor, there are numerous examples where given birth-date is later than baptism, dates of 31st in months of 30 days and also numerous semiliterate spellings which have been recorded as written in the register. The film quality was, however, good and most entries were readable with only a few written in barely legible hand. Errors will have occurred due to these hands but hopefully they will be few in number. |
