1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Diss Wesleyan Methodist Circuit |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The Wesleyan movement became established in the Norfolk market town of Diss as early as 1783 with a chapel erected in Norwich Road in 1789. This chapel became the focal point for a circuit which straddled the Norfolk/Suffolk border, Diss sits very close to that border formed by the River Waveney. Two registers have been deposited, the first as part of the general surrender of Non-Conformist registers is held by The National Archives as their piece RG4/642, Norfolk Record Office have a copy on Microfilm MF1147. In recent times digitised images of this register have been made available on most of the major commercial sites. A second register, formatted similarly to a standard parish baptismal register but lacking the occupational field, is deposited with Norfolk Record Office as their piece FC74/2 and is filmed on Microfilm MF1602 which was used to prepare this transcript. It should be noted that there is a one year gap between these two registers with no records. The entries are, as for most Circuits, in a chaotic sequence indicative of multiple clerks completing their entries retrospectively therefore not following the number sequence, spelling is frequently indicative of semi-literacy and often phonetic, all such spellings have been left as written and event dates are often illogical with numerous examples of baptism before stated birth date and insufficient elapsed time between birth dates in multiple child baptisms. |
