1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Dilham St Nicholas |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Dilham lies in northeastern Norfolk about
4 miles southeast of the market town of North Walsham. Dilham sits just
to the east of the A149 road which connects Cromer with Great Yarmouth,
just by where this road crosses a tributary of the River Ant, one of Broadland's
main rivers. The parish sits on the border of prime agricultural land
and the grazing marshes and water meadows on the Ant valley. The main
street of the village wanders northwards from the main road and most of
the village's housing can be found here. The land is quite low lying being
less than 10 metres above sea level but the Hall and church sit on a relative
rise and keep their feet dry. |

The records for this parish covering the period of the transcript have not been fully deposited with Norfolk Record Office. A standard 800-entry register covers the period to 1864 and is filmed on Microfiche 4 & 5 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office, the remaining entries were drawn from the deposited Bishop's Transcripts which sadly are incomplete lacking (in common with most parishes) 1875, however only 5 entries are missing. The fiche of the first register are of the poor standard common to the period of their filming, images on Familysearch were used in preference; the BTs are also a mixed bag - some clear, others rather poor. It must also be said that Dilham was not blessed with neat clerks, the standard of handwriting was largely poor and many entries were difficult to read. Given these circumstances readers are urged to treat this transcript with some caution as some mistakes will definitely have been made given the quality of the source material. |
