Baptisms 1813 to 1880
East Dereham is the major market town of central Norfolk.
The town, situated and thankfully bypassed by, the main A47 east/west
route across Norfolk. East Dereham has a long history with evidence suggesting
a settlement was here as early as the 7th century. The town is certainly
mentioned in Domesday Book and the market was documented as granted in
the mid-13th century. The "east" is often dropped in the present
day but is kept here to distinguish from the small village of West Dereham
close to Downham Market. Nowadays East Dereham is a thriving settlement
despite the loss of its railway to the Beching axe. The original settlement
and market north of the bypass has been supplemented by substantial industrial
and retail developments to its south. |

The period of the transcript is covered by three 2400-entry registers as befits a substantial market town. The first covers 1813 to 1836, the second from 1836 to 1861 and the third ends beyond the period of the transcript in 1881; all three register are filmed on Microfilm MF701 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office and from which this transcript was prepared. The microfilm is one of the earlier films for the archive and suffers a little from the quality standards of that period. The film is often faint and the entries are at times a little difficult to read. Given the extensive volume of the transcript it is certain that all qualities of handwriting will have been experienced in the period. Whilst these two caveats are there to remind users that errors may have crept in it is hoped these are few. |
