Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Burnham Westgate, which incorporates Burnham
Market, lies in northwestern Norfolk about 6 miles west of Wells next
the Sea. The parish takes its name from the church sitting at what was
the western aspect of the market town, Westgate. Burnham Market is a small
market town, one of the collective of parishes "The Burnhams"
and which which sits on the B1355 road which connects the coastal A149
through to the larger market town of Fakenham. Whilst Burnham Market sits
a couple of miles inland there is no doubt that maritime interests dominated
here, the "staithes", tidal harbours, at Burnham Norton &
Burnham Overy being important to the trade of the town. The hinterland
was arable like much of Norfolk. Today Burnham Market is the most expensive
area to buy property in the county, its scenic attractions making it a
desirable spot for second homes and earning it the nickname of "Chelsea
by the Sea" for the weekend wave from the capital, a situation that
makes it difficult for locals to acquire property unless through the inheritance
route. |

Two standard 800-entry register books cover the period of this transcript and run onwards to completion in the late 20th century. These register are filmed on Microfiche 6 through 9 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office but digitised imagery is also available free to view of Familysearch and for a subscription of the major commercial sites. Given the poor quality of fiche the online images were utilised to prepare this transcript. Whilst the images were acceptable and adequate to the task the clerical standards were a little poor, spelling varied significantly from today's norms and the date sequence of entries betrays a practice of making up the book from recorded scraps rather than at point of ceremony. Despite these challenges and idiosyncrasies this was a straightforward piece to prepare, all spellings of names are as written. |
