Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Burgh St Peter lies in the extreme southeast
of Norfolk bounded on three sides by Suffolk territory and bordered by
a great bend in the course of the River Waveney. Burgh St Peter sits at
the eastern end of a long promontory of land extending eastwards almost
to the edges of the port of Lowestoft, it lies about 4 miles northeast
of the Suffolk market town of Beccles and is only approachable along narrow
and winding lanes. The parish has extensive grazing marshes and would
have been a haunt of wildfowlers, wherrymen & reed cutters at the
time of this transcript. Above the 3 metres contour line the parish would
have been largely arable and Burgh St Peter's main settlement sits atop
the ridge of land at almost 20 metres above the sea & marsh level.

A single standard 9800-entry register book covers the period of this transcript and runs onward into the early 20th century. This register is filmed on Microfilm MF1700 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office and this film was used to prepare this transcript. The film is a more recent one and of good optical quality throughout, the handwriting and spelling less so. It should be noted that there numerous marginal entries and spelling of some names is recorded exactly as spelt in the register - don't blame the transcriber. |
