1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Briston & Guestwick Independent Congregationalist |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The area around Briston in Norfolk has a long tradition of nonconformism and the Independent Congregation which supported not only Briston & Guestwick but also a wide swathe of central northern Norfolk was founded in 1652 during the post Civil War administration of Oliver Cromwell. After meeting in various houses a chapel was finally dedicated in 1695, this has been rebuilt many times over the years before finally closing not long after the end of this transcript period. Two register for this congregation are in the public domain. The first commences in 1786 and was deposited with The National Archives as part of the associated legislation that set up Civil Registration in 1837. This register is filmed by TNA and the Norfolk Record Office has a copy on Microfilm 1146 in its collection which was used in this transcript. This film is not particularly good with hazy images lacking clear contrast which makes for a challenging read, hopefully few errors will have been committed although they cannot be ruled out. The numbering of this register is just a sequence indicator and not in the original register. The second register commences in 1874 and runs beyond the end of the transcript period to finish in 1901. This register is filmed on Microfilm MF1779 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office which was used to prepare this transcript. This film is much better with clear and contrasting images making for a straightforward transcript to prepare. |
