Baptisms 1813 to 1881
This remote parish lies deep in Breckland in the valley of the River Thet, the occupations listed for fathers in this transcript give some idea of the rural nature of this area. The Breckland area was largely used for the keeping of sheep as the soils were very poor and sandy and, therefore, inappropriate for the widespread growing of crops. The coming of the railway signalled a change to the area and a more diverse range of occupations appeared. The parish is bordered to the north by East Wretham, Roudham & Eccles, to the east by East Harling, to the south lay Brettenham & West Harling whilst to the west was Kilverstone. | |
Transcribed from fiche 5 & 6 of the registers of Bridgham, St Mary. The handwriting and date sequencing for the first 20 years of this transcript are, to put it mildly, awful, no responsibility is acknowledged for any error or omission. |
