1813 to 1880 Baptism Project East Bradenham St Mary |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of East Bradenham lies in central Norfolk
roughly 6 miles southwest of the market town of East Dereham. In
reality there is no such village as East Bradenham just a
village of Bradenham with a church, and consequently a parish,
at each end. Bradenham sits in an area devoid of significant
numbered roads, the closest such road being the A1075 road
linking East Dereham with Thetford which runs almost 3 miles to
Bradenham's southeast. Bradenham sits in prime agricultural
land, east of Norfolk's Breckland with its poorer soils here the
fertile glacial deposits make for excellent cereal growing.
Besides the ubiquitous wheat & barley there are more modern
crops such as beet and oil-seed, the whole sitting in large and
largely hedge-less fields. Running through the northern edges of
Bradenham one finds the infant River Wissey whereby its
water-meadows grant a few pastures for a little diversity. |

Two standard 800-entry register books
cover not only the period of this transcript, the second runs
onward to complete in 1994. The first register is filmed on
Microfiche 5 & 6 in the collection of the Norfolk Record
Office whilst the second is a more recent deposit and is filmed on
Microfilm MF1659. Thankfully the use of the really elderly fiche
is nowadays replaced by online digitised imagery, free to view on
Familysearch whilst both registers are available in digital form
on most of the commercial sites for those with appropriate
subscriptions. This wealth of resources makes for a
straightforward piece to prepare. The registers do suffer from
poor clerical work at times and casualness has resulted in 3
entries with incomplete dates as well as tricky reading on
occasions. A further issue within the first register is
bleed-through of backing entries which caused the abandonment of
some pages by the clerk at the time of creation such was its
impact, hence the gaps in the numbering. |
