1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Bircham Tofts St Andrew |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Bircham Tofts lies in northwestern
Norfolk about 9 miles west of the market town of Fakenham and 7
southwest of Burnham Market. There is not much to Bircham Tofts,
merely an eastward extension of neighbouring Great Bircham
situated on the B1155 which connects Great Bircham with Burnham
Market. This area of the county was, at the time of this
transcript, an important area for raising of sheep, mainly for
their wool. Today the area is largely arable, sitting on the
underlying chalk the soils are, however, thin and not especially
suitable for cereals requiring extensive enrichment. The parish
area is dominated by the cranes of the National Construction
College, despite early 21st century doubts over its survival,
built on the former World War 2 air-base |

A single standard 800-entry register book covered not only the period of this transcript but ran onwards until closed in 1924. This register is filmed on Microfilm MF736 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office. Like many Norfolk parishes digitised imagery is also available, for free on Familysearch, and to those with subscriptions on the major commercial web sites. The superior digital images, with their benefits in manipulation, were utilised to prepare this transcript making for a straightforward piece to prepare. |
