Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Bircham Newton lies
in northwestern Norfolk about 6 miles southeast of the seaside
resort of Hunstanton. Bircham Newton is a tiny place of a few
houses a mile north of its larger neighbour, Great Bircham, which
sits on the B1153 road heading towards Docking. Bircham Newton
consists of a few properties along that road together with a large
expanse of arable farmland dominated by the presence of the The
National Construction College residing on a former World War 2
airfield. At the time of this transcript Bircham Newton would have
been little more than a hamlet of 100 souls but separate and
distinct from Great Bircham. Modern farming techniques and the
removal of hedgerows have brought a prairie-like aspect to this
corner of north Norfolk where vast fields of cereals today
dominate the landscape. In the past the chalky hills hereabouts
would have seen sheep pastures amid the cereals. |

A single standard 800-entry register book covers the period of this transcript and runs onward to completion in the late 20th century. This register is yet to be filmed by Norfolk Record Office but digitised copies are available to those with a subscription to the commercial sites. As this transcript was prepared during lock-down restrictions closing Norfolk Record Office these images were used to prepare this transcript. As a result of their quality this was a straightforward piece to prepare. |
