Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Bessingham lies in northeastern Norfolk
about 5 miles south of the seaside resort of Sheringham. Bessingham is
a rather small village, little more than a collection of farms and cottages,
built around a triangular junction of lanes somewhat distant from any
of Norfolk's major roads. The A148 (Cromer to KIng's Lynn road lies 2
1/2 miles to the north and the A140 (Norwich to Cromer road) lies 3 miles
to the east. Bessingham sits in a patchwork of rather tiny parishes which
dot the undulating landscape to the south of the Cromer/Holt ridge - a
remnant glacial feature which dominates this part of Norfolk. In common
with much of Norfolk the land is largely arable farmland. |

A single standard 800-entry book covers the period of the transcript and indeed continued onwards to completion in the mid-20th century. This register is filmed on Microfilm MF585 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office which was used to prepare this transcript. Whilst not one of the more recent films the quality and state of preservation is adequate to the task, of course there are irritations in the handwriting but these are minimal. |
