Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Banham lies in southern Norfolk about 3
miles south of the market town of Attleborough. Banham is a substantial
village which sits about 2 miles west of the B1077 road linking Attleborough
with Diss. Whilst Banham sits in lanes these lanes have been widened considerably
for modern traffic serving what is undoubtedly a large village. Most of
Banham sits on or around its High Street, a north south road connecting
two broad east/west running lanes forming an elongated "I" shape.
The High Street has many examples of timber framed buildings from as far
back as the 15th century. Banham sits on a broad agricultural plain sitting
between 40 & 50 metres above sea level and is surrounded by arable
fields, often large and very open; to the northeast land falls into Banham
Moor from where a small stream heads westwards to join the Thet. Banham
today is proud to retain most of its facilities with numerous shops, inns
and other services still supporting a thriving population. |

Two register books cover the period of this transcript. The first is a 1600-entry book running through to 1859 whilst an 800-entry book covers 1860 onwards finishing in 1886. Both registers are filmed on Microfilm MF1694 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office which were used to prepare this transcript. Banham's parish records are a relatively recent deposit and this microfilm is consequently one of the more modern improved filmings. The image quality throughout was good with crisp and contrasting images making only the quality of the handwriting potentially an issue. Whilst this was mostly good in such a large volume of entries there are bound to be some which are tricky to read either because of the hand or accident (such as ink spillage, smears etc.). It should be noted that during the period when birth dates are recorded they are often written over the top of the preprinted entry numbers making it likely a few have been misread as a result. |
