1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Aylsham Primitive Methodist Circuit |
Baptisms 1836 to 1880
The Primitive Methodist Circuit based on the North Norfolk market town of Aylsham was founded in 1836, the circuit covers a wide area of Norfolk roughly from the river Bure northwards to the North Norfolk coast. As to be expected a substantial proportion of the entries within this register are based in the market town itself; however, there is a surprising number of entries from within the fishing communities of Sheringham and associated villages, as well as the hot-beds of non-conformism around Briston. This register is filmed on microfilm MF1600 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office from which this transcript was prepared. As befits a modern filming the images were clear with good resolution and contrast. In common with many registers of the Primitive Methodist Church it is clear that the register was completed in retrospect from several differant working documents; the entries are far from in date-sequence often jumping back to prior years. In the case of this transcript the sequence numbering is merely the order in which the entries are found in the book ; it has been included to aide researchers in finding the entry they are interested in. It would be worthwhile for the researcher to consult the original as in most instances the village of residence is also mentioned in the entry. Whilst the standard of image was as good as could be expected the same
could not be said for the scribes; indeed some of the spellings and hand-writing
indicate that some of the entries were made by persons barely literate.
As a consequence there remains the possibility that transcription errors
sue to the standard of writing have crept in to this transcript. It is
to be hoped these are few in number and do not detract from the whole.
