Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Aylmerton lies in northern Norfolk not too
far from its North Sea coastline and roughly 3 miles southwest
of the coastal resort of Cromer. Aylmerton sits about a half
mile south of the A148 road which links Cromer across the county
to the port of Kings Lynn. There are two distinct parts to
Aylmerton, a presence on the A148, with inn and filling station,
and a collection of farms and cottages around a three-way
junction to its south. Aylmerton sits upon a noticeable ridge,
slightly higher ground for Norfolk, which was formed by glacial
deposits giving it a much less fertile soil than normal for the
county. As a consequence, whilst still rather important, early
gazetteers estimate that only 60% of the acreage was set to
arable, much less than is typical. A further 20% was set to
woodland and this land-use continues today with The Great Wood
shared between Aylmerton & neighbouring Felbrigg. The Lion's
Mouth is a popular spot for local woodland walking. |

A single standard 800-entry register book
covers not only the period of this transcript but runs onward to
completion in the early 20th century. A legacy film on Microfilm
MFRO343 at Norfolk Record Office was used to complete this
transcript. For those with appropriate subscription digitised
imagery from this film is available on most of the commercial
sites. Whilst the media is adequate to the task, the same cannot
be said for the handwriting which is challenging at times and a
caveat as to accuracy must be in place as a consequence, misreads
may be present due to the quality of the clerical work. |
